Alex Cowey

Professional profile

Mr Cowey is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand surgeon who deals with all aspects of the specialty.

Mr Cowey graduated from Manchester University in 1998. He completed his higher surgical training in Oswestry, Shropshire, an international centre for orthopaedic training and in 2007 became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics and Trauma. He went on to complete a highly specialised training fellowship in hand surgery in Manchester and Wrightington, where he learnt from some of the best hand surgeons in the UK. In 2009 he was awarded a diploma in Hand Surgery by the British Society for the Surgery of the Hand.

In 2009 he was appointed as an orthopaedic hand and trauma surgeon at the Royal United Hospital Bath and started work at the hand to Elbow clinic.

Mr Cowey undertakes all forms of Hand and Wrist surgery including trauma and is part of a local network of hand and wrist surgeons who regularly discuss complex cases and their practices to ensure he maintains exceptional standards and continues to learn for those around him.

Mr Cowey is a keen educator and has received awards for his teaching of medical students as well as training the hand surgeons of the future. He has lectured in hand surgery both nationally and internationally. He has sat on the Educational and Training committee for the British Society for the Surgery of the Hand and is a faculty member of the AO Foundation – an internationally recognised authority in trauma surgery.

Personal Profile

Mr Cowey is married to Sarah, a Gynaecologist, they have two children, Finley and Tom. Outside of work Mr Cowey spends most of his time on the golf course and is a single figure handicapper, or trying to keep up with children on the ski slopes (a battle that cannot be won).
